Masculinity Bytes


The pictures above are of my grandfather and father. My grandfather was South Asian and born in South Africa. He emigrated to London, England around the turn of the 20th century. My father was born in 1922. His mother was of Eastern European descent. In spite of his mixed heritage, he was distinctly darker than other school children his age, particularly since immigration of South Asians to England didn’t really begin in earnest until the 1950s. My grandfather and father were exotic “darkies” in a sea of pale faces, at the epicentre of colonialism.

My father was also a smart little boy, and was sent to a public school that mimicked the curriculum one would have found at a private school. Once there, he experienced an event that he retold with regularity well into his 80s (he is now 90 years old.) When he met his headmaster for the first time, apparently the…
